Just to clariry, you are talking about just pulling the prop shaft out of the gearcase correct? And not just dropping the gear instance, or swapping the bulldoze shaft?

It would really assistance to know what model year your motor is. the method of getting the shaft out varies a lot with older models. You will demand an adjustable spanner wrench to fit the locking ring inside the gearcase housing which holds the bearing carriers in backside the prop. You will as well first need to driblet the lower gearcase off the mid leg of the motor. It is preferred to have a big vice and holding fixture to mount the gearcase before removing the bearing carrier. It is in there very tight. The best thing to do is get a service transmission with the exploded drawings, footstep by step instructions, pictures of special tools and descriptions, and proper torque values for re-assembly. Don't forget the antizeize compound for any of the bolts that screw into the aluminum gearcases, and don't forget a kit of new seals and pressure exam when you lot button information technology all support. This is a job that i would not do without a service manual sitting in forepart of me. I've worked on plenty of outboards, but every one is different in the specifics, even from one model year to the next. BillS

In order to remove the propeller shaft from the gear case you typically have to remove a circular servant plumbing equipment which threads inside the cone of the lower unit of measurement bullet. This fitting typically has an unusual shape which requires a matching tool to facilitate removal. Likewise, if this plumbing equipment has never been removed from an engine similar yours (13-years quondam), and the engine has been operated in saltwater, it may be quite difficult to break this fitting loose, fifty-fifty using the proper tooling, because of corrosion. Aluminum parts like this which take been threaded together for a long fourth dimension tin be reluctant to dissever. It is often necessary to resort to heating of the gear case to become this servant to loosen. Heating of the gear case has to be done very carefully so as not to burn upwardly everything yet inside.

Information technology has been my experience that even primary technicians cannot become the round retainer loose from older gear cases, and they have to resort to grinding them or chiseling them into pieces to remove them. This will, of course, require getting a new servant.

I mention all this so you lot understand that opening the gear case is not something to exercise on a lark, and you lot may exist opening up the proverbial tin of worms in terms of how much money you volition need to put it all back together.

You should pay an experienced mechanic to perform this operation. Special tools are required and the gears/bearings may need to exist shimmed in social club to have the new part. Never utilize neversieze or anti-sieze compounds on marine applications. This will upshot in electralisis at the threads and may get in fifty-fifty more diffucult to remove them in the time to come. Especially below the h2o line. You would be better of using Aviation Form-A-Gasket or the OMC "Cheesewhiz" equivalent. Steve

I don't believe ANY special tools are required to remove the propshaft on YOUR model. You can actually use your propeller and it's rear thrust washer as a tool to "unscrew" the bearing carrier.
Nonetheless, I'yard not going to become into any item, because I FIRMLY BELIEVE that anyone attempting service on their engine should ALWAYs accept the correct Manufacturing plant manual in front of them and should be familiar with the process before attempting the job. You are probably attempting to replace the propshaft seal?
